I need a book to read

Post by ao_ »

So, I am away for work and am looking for something good to read. I wouldn't say I am the 'deep literary' type but enjoy a good plot line as well as character development. I just finished reading 1984 by George Orwell and absolutely loved it. I decided to read Brave New World but it isn't really keeping my attention. I am highly interested in science fiction stories from the early twentieth century trying to predict what our society would be like as computers become more prevelant... Fahrenheit 451, Player Piano, are a few titles I really enjoyed. Pretty much anything by PKD or Kurt Vonnegut. In all honesty, I even like the the senseless non fiction stories by Dan Brown, so I am pretty wide open on what I will read. Anyways, I figured I could maybe get some good recommendations, thanks.

Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It will keep you busy for quite some time, Andrew.

based (more or less) on your criteria, the first sci-fi/fantasy novel suggestion that comes to my mind is dune

They're really good books I could send you a few more if you would like.

Both books were number one sellers a few times.

Some good sci-fi would be Nexus by ramez naam. It's more of a hard science fiction book, so it's based in what could actually be reality.

Great book, engaging, and extremely well-written.

The Last Lion

http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Lion-Chu ... 0345548639

The man was amazing and maybe one of the most important figures that century

-Shows how bad the french handled the war
-Shows how bad FDR handled the war
-Shows how much Churhill drank and stilled handled his shit

I'm only half way through it but it's a big book and a lot to take in

I just started reading The Gentleman Bastards series and so far I'm really digging it. Kind of a mystery series set in a fantasy type world (think Game of Thrones, not LotR). Picked up the first book mainly because RR Martin gave it some good reviews.

Be a man and read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick. Then double-down on your manliness and read The 3 Stigmata of Palmer Edritch.

Looks like I am a half man then Mitch, I haven't read the 3 Stigmata of Palmer Edritch, but will definitely add that to my list. My favorite PKD story by far was A Scanner Darkly though (probably because I saw the movie prior to discovering PKD's writing). I met a girl on a plane who told me that I should read The Man in the High Castle, after arriving I ordered it and then immediately got hooked on all of PKD's writing. That also introduced me to Vonnegut as they kind of go hand in hand for science fiction from the second half of the twentieth century.

I ended up choosing Nexus to read, as Josh said it is a pretty hard science fiction story but I am enjoying it. I appreciate all of the recommendations though, it is fun to hear what everyone else likes to read. I have toiled with the idea of reading the Ender's game series and think I may add those to my list of wanting to read as well.

PKD's work really did add a certain seriousness to the genre that I think was lacking from the left's perspective. There have been good writers before, Heinlein, Clarke, and Asimov for sure, but I don't think they get close to the depth Dick wrote with.

The Man in the High Castle is delightful.

You might enjoy Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. I didn't much care for Starship Troopers by him, but Stranger is good.
