england 1 - 1 USA
england 0 - 0 algeria
england 1 - 0 slovenia
terrible results in a far easier group than we have this time, and it was with a better team than we have now as well
it's hard to look past argentina and brazil to win but I kinda fancy germany for some reason

If we can beat Ghana, I'm optimistic, and think we have a chance to move out of the knockout stage. The strikers by committee that replaced Donovan have scored 4-5 goals collectively in the warmup matches going into the WC. So that right there is something to be happy about it.
Everyone said Portugal would roll over us in 2010 and they didn't. If we can beat Ghana, I think we have a good shot.

i hope for that also very much, but tbh anything less then half-finals would be a real disappointment. In my opinion the injury situation isn't as bad as displayed by media, even though the loss of Reuss really hurts, but still a world class team :pmilo wrote:I hope my Germans win it, but it doesn't look likely after a shit load of injuries :/

that was a dissapointing game from the ref, but the goalie cost croatia the match! he should have been stronger to save that penalty, and the last goal was a shitty toepoke where he kinda just flopped to the floor at a glacial pace

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
I agree with the penalty (Nishimura's mistake but you should blame Fifa picking up referees from football backwaters, not Brazil), he should have defended. For the third goal, no. If you look at the replay the ball was really well placed and I don't think many goalkeepers would be able to save it. Maybe E. Van der Sar on his prime lol. The first goal was defensible though. Pletikosa jump save attempt was really delayed, costing him the chance of defense.An1maL wrote:that was a dissapointing game from the ref, but the goalie cost croatia the match! he should have been stronger to save that penalty, and the last goal was a shitty toepoke where he kinda just flopped to the floor at a glacial pace
Re: WORLD CUP 2014
we're reading that differently, for the first goal at least he properly dived horizontally and still couldn't get it. for the third goal all he had to do was just get down since it was not even a body length away from him, plus the shot wasn't very powerful and from way outside the box! but you're right that his reaction speed was the problem toocassinoroyale wrote: For the third goal, no. Re: WORLD CUP 2014
Brazil won this match thanks to the ref. A player who weighs 90kg does not fall that easy from a hand on his shoulder. I actually think Croatia deserved to win this match, because Brazil had periods when they was just playing awful. The trio Modric/Rakitic/Kovacic easily controlled the middle against Paulinho/Luis Gustavo/Hulk(expected more from him).
I had love to see Mandzukic play, to bad he was suspended.
Pletikosa performance was better than Júlio César.
I had love to see Mandzukic play, to bad he was suspended.
Stipe Pletikosa is 35 years old, at that age your speed is not that good anymore. You can't really blame him for the 3rd goal.(Didn't watch the 2nd goal, can't argue about that one). The toepoke from Oscar had a really good precision considering he shot while running and not many goalkeepers expect that. Never underestimate a toepoke, it's actually very effective =)An1maL wrote:that was a dissapointing game from the ref, but the goalie cost croatia the match! he should have been stronger to save that penalty, and the last goal was a shitty toepoke where he kinda just flopped to the floor at a glacial pace

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
Really? I thought the 3rd goal was good. Oscar struck the ball at a time when most goalies wouldn't expect a shot. Even I was surprised when he put it on goal. The 1st goal I thought he needed to do better on... it was so slow that he had time to take another step before diving but he just went to the ground and didn't make it far enough to get a touch.
The penalty was whatever... FIFA needs to suspend Fred (and all players that do that shit) for a game for that, because it's really fucking hard to tell if these professional actors are acting. To expect the refs to get every call right when the players are flopping around like fish is too much. I thought the goalie interference call against croatia was very light considering the penalty brasil was given though.
All sports should adopt hockey's way of calling dives. Call a penalty against the other team, but then also call them for embellishment to offset it. The way it's called now actually doesn't discourage diving at all.

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
You're right that it's too hard for refs to spot diving, sometimes based on the angle it's physically impossible for a ref to judge if there's contact. The punishment needs to be reassessed, people get yellow carded a lot for diving in the UK premiership, not seen much of that in international games though. IMO retrospective banning would put a stop to it the fastest, imagine if fred was awarded a one game ban now, he'd cut that shit right out
Watching the Mexico - Cameroon game, we've really gotta get video analysis for important calls - mexico just had two legit goals disallowed. First one was kinda close, offside decisions are hard to judge as linesmen literally have to look in two places at once so they deserve some sympathy. But the second one is an absolute joke, it clearly came off a cameroon head on the way through, 5 seconds of video analysis would see justice done. Frankly if these errors continue it's embarrassing for the sport

Re: WORLD CUP 2014
I agree that the Croatian goalie should have done a better job. If he's too old and slow, then it's the Coach's fault for picking him to play in a World Cup. Stupidest argument ever.
Even tho the play was poor, I'm glad Brazil won. Could you imagine if they lost the opening match of the World Cup in their own homeland? The whole f'n country would erupt and riot and probably prevent any more matches from being played, lol
edit: Animal I thought FIFA implemented goal line cameras/replay last cup?

Puting a goalkeeper with experience even if he's old and slow have never a bad thing, because he bring experience to the field which is needed. No matter how good a team is. You can't pick 3 goalskeepers with barely any experience of being in the squad for previous World Cup/*Insert name of region cup(e.g European Championship) or main goalie for a team in the big 5(Premier League, Liga BBVA, Bundesliga, Lique 1 & Serie A). There's one thing if the club haven't participated for a long time or if it's the first time.
I'm not that familiar with Croatia and goalkeepers beside Pletikosa, so don't know how good his backups are.
Re: WORLD CUP 2014
lol I was thinking the same, imagine if they didn't qualify from the group, given that there's already mass protests against the world cup and over HALF the country didn't want it in the first place ( comical summary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlJEt2KU33I )tenks wrote:Even tho the play was poor, I'm glad Brazil won. yeh we have the technology that tells us whether or not the ball has crossed the line almost instantly, but that's it so far. that's pretty rarely useful and doesn't help for calls like offside decisions, penalty decisions or diving etc. the main argument against having replay analysis is that it will slow down the game stopping every minute to analyse something, and football is supposed to be a free flowing spectacle. I think they should do something like wimbledon where you get 3 challenges per game (& correct challenge doesn't use up one)tenks wrote:edit: Animal I thought FIFA implemented goal line cameras/replay last cup?

Lineups for Spain - Netherlands. Starting in 20 minutes
Spain: 4-3-2-1
Casillas
Azplicueta, Piqué, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba
Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Xavi
Silva, Iniesta
Diego Costa.
Netherlands: 5-3-2
Cillessen
Janmaat, Vlaar, De Vrij, Martins Indi, Blind
De Guzman, Sneijder, De Jong
Robben, Van Persie.
I'm looking forward for this match, will be interesting how well Oranjes' defense can stop Diego Costa & Co. Van Gaal made the decision to play with 5-3-2 instead for 4-3-3 is a interesting choice. However, Spain should have no problems to defeat Netherlands.

lol John one thing is discuss whether Fred dove for the penalty or not and a totally different thing is put the final score under the refeere's account. Don't forget that Croatia actually didn't exactly scored, it was a own goal and ultimately bad luck. Modric/Rakitic controlled the game? u srs?
On a side note the Dutch squad revenge along with Robben's redemptive play was amazing. The top 1 goal up to now was Van Persie's head dive. Wish Falcao Garcia wasn't injured and Ibrahimovic qualified. Fuck Ribery.
Great games thus far, anyone watching Chile vs Aussies? Dat Bravo save. He would've saved both Oscar and Neymar's goals, An1. LoL

Van Persie's goal has to be one of the most beautiful headers I have seen. What a ball from Daley Blind(the leftback) who also assisted to Robben's goal. Blind's leftfoot is dangerous.
I watched Chile - Australia and really enjoyed Chile's game the first 30 minutes. Aussies was not able to hunt the ball all the time. Wonderful teamplay for Chile's first 2 goals.
Anyone else who saw Mexico - Cameroon?
I expected a good game from both team, but only Mexico was playing well today. Giovani Dos Santos had a great evening/day(whenever it was played local brazil time) and unfortunately the ref made awful calls. Rafael Marquez, jesus this guy can still make phenomenal key passes. Always enjoyed watching mexicans play football from the day my old football team played some youth team for one of the top tier teams in Mexico. Their football is fun to watch, but not to play against.
Re: WORLD CUP 2014
I think you can put a lot of blame on the referee for the result of that match. Up until that penalty Croatia had played every bit as well as Brazil had and Brazil did not look like scoring at any point(the 3rd goal came because Croatia were chasing). That is not to say that Brazil would not have scored because no one could predict that but he changed the entire context of the match by awarding that penalty, it was a shocking decision. Let's not even mention the contentious free kick that Cesar was given where Croatia ended up with the ball in the net, it was extremely soft and the keeper should have been stronger, they get way too much protection imo. On a sidenote I thought Oscar was the best player on the pitch that night.cassinoroyale wrote:lol John one thing is discuss whether Fred dove for the penalty or not and a totally different thing is put the final score under the refeere's account. Not sure we watched the same match then DinG coz at that point Brazil already had tied the score and was playing better than Croatia. Let alone the fact that the penalty came when Brazil was pressing for the 2nd goal. The bit you talked about wasn't even argued by Croatia...

Anyone going to watch Uruguay v Costa Rica?
Uruguay (Possible, 4-4-2): Muslera; Pereira, Lugano, Godin, Caceres; Rios, Lodeiro, Stuani, Rodriguez; Forlan, Cavani.
Test: Suárez (knee).
Costa Rica (Possible, 5-4-1): Navas; Gamboa, Umana, Gonzalez, Acosta, Diaz; Bolanos, Borges, Tejeda; Campbell, Ruiz.
I hope Suárez will be able to play today, even without him they have put up a strong line up. Strong defense, Diego Godin have been a key player for Atletico Madrid last season and Maxi Pereira will be offensive on this rightside.
I had like to see Gastón Ramirez to start instead for Christian Stuani.
I'm not that familar with Costa Rica's squad, beside Celso Borges who play for the Swedish club AIK, Bryan Ruiz, Fulham and Joel Campbell, Arsenal FC.

I'm not banging anything An1 I just begged to differ in about almost everything DinG said lol. I follow football throughout the calendar and it just lame seeing people who seems to watch football once in a while or when it's WC bashing or complaining about the match. Not saying that to you directly as England passion for football is as great as ours, that's why I am not even quoting a specific post. IMHO Croatia was superior the first 20 minutes of 1st half and after that the dominance alternated till the end. I'd say that a tie would've been more fair as the penalty was clearly dubius (I am sure we haven't seen other occasions like that right?! ehhh) but it's pointless to discuss. I'm not into Brazil's bandwagon locally I just hate seeing unilateral ignorance, be it based under media or not. I got your opinion since your first post so let's just agree to disagree, there are plenty of interesting matches going forward ie Costa Rica beating Uruguay for 3-1 lulz

It is fine having a differing opinion, loads of people do in football. I just think you will find most of the world thought that Croatia were robbed that night if you ask anyone not from Brazil or read any actual reports on the match.
