DoD Revival

Post by CeebzMom »

With the phrase "DoD is dead" floating around for the past half a year, it's difficult to not believe it or even see DoD otherwise. However, I will give my perspective on the DoD 1.3 situation, explain and describe why it's dead, and tell what we can do to change it.

It's no question that the most recent TPG season has been the most inactive competitive season in Day of Defeat's competitive career. Team numbers are relatively fine, honestly, but that's not the problem(s); the numbers have still dropped, especially concerning the amount of the higher-level competitive individuals and teams. Scrimming is at an all-time low, and most teams do not own a server.

The odd point about this all, is that a nice amount of people/teams still love to play this game. The problem to me, it seems: everyone is just going with the flow and letting DoD fade, even though they don't want it to fade. A very few people, if any at all, have stepped up to the plate and voiced their opinions, given suggestions, or things of that nature. And those who have opened their mouth to speak, and maybe had good ideas, either didn't put their ideas into action for long or didn't even lift a finger to execute at all.

I know the ambition of DoD players and teams is high, it simply lurks in the dark waiting for a torch to follow. If you make some simple time and effort to do your part in the community, I guarantee that this game's competitive scene could turn back around in an instant. How do I know this? Well it's simple; because the game and its competitive aspect is what the player-base makes of it.

1) Fix the mentality.
This is the first step, because to accomplish the rest of the steps you will need this for support. As we all know, in recent DoD history it has become sort of a shameful thing to care about the game. It is "looked down upon" to scrim or practice for matches, or care about much of anything related to the game. Well I ask you one thing: who exactly is making these rules? Is it that a horde of some well-known former players are setting the mood for this game, and the remaining/newer community is taking the heat because they feel powerless? Hmmm. I want to tell you that the community who plays the game makes the rules. Try hard if you want to, make the game competitive again. Don't be ashamed to spam for scrims, voice your opinion on 1911, or anything else. If you like the game and want to see it back up again (and I'm talking the real deal), don't worry about what the nay-sayers are saying. Don't give them power to tell you how to play the game that they don't play (that you play). Stop giving into the "DoD is dead" attitude, and lift a finger.

2) All these points tie in together, so, fresh out of that last paragraph, I want to put the emphasis on practicing/scrimming, and having your own server. Have your team pitch in to buy a server if you don't have one. Depending on the amount of people on your team, this could be anywhere from a few dollars a month per player, to maybe ten dollars per player per month. That is not a lot. You could even weigh the distribution of funds according to who is more willing based on their lifestyle and whatnot. It's not hard to buy a server for your team, everyone had a server in the past for matches, scrims, and practice, and people do it today in every other game out there (including DoD somewhat). Once you have a server, you can look for scrims more.

3) Volunteer your skills to further the scene. If you are good at video editing and things like that, you could help out with the Frags of the Week videos. If you are good in photoshop, you could help the video makers. If you are a good writer, you could submit articles to 1911 or become a regular writer for DoD predictions. If you have good organizational and social skills, you could look into organizing a LAN in your local town. The list goes on and on, but I'm sure people can figure out how to lend a helping hand.

4) Some other things that would help the scene are as follows:
a) Know your rates and try to get decent servers. it's frustrating to play when nothing hits people. In the past it was looked down upon to use rates around 60 or lower for cmd/updaterate, and lower than 20000 for rate. This is the generally accepted truth in all half-life games. 95% of people should be running 100 cmd/updaterate and 100000 rate, your only excuse is a truly poor computer and internet. Then, try to not buy the cheapest servers around.
b) Be nice to new players. Help them out. Believe it or not, people still discover this game to this day, and will continue to do so. A lot of these people end up in the pubs, so don't be a jerk there. Also, you could promote league-play on your local pub's community forum. I have done this for well over a year and I guarantee I've gotten more than a few people involved.

5) Don't cheat. Cheating includes anything from cheat programs, to scripts, to extreme gamma whoring and other gamma commands, to any other config cvars that allow an obvious advantage over those who are playing the game in a legitimate fashion. There are certainly some config commands which can be altered for better fps and gameplay, but there is a clear line between those settings and settings that render you as a "cheater." If you aren't sure, ask someone who would know. Cheating will get you nowhere in real-life (or if it does, it won't last long and you will end up worse-off than before) and it will get you nowhere but hated in online gaming. Think sensibly, don't ruin it for everyone else.

This article was a long one, but it talks about some very realistic and simple things we could do to bring the game back to its rightfully-deserved awesome status. These things do not take much of your time, just a shift in attitude and a simple execution of some generally simple ideas. I'm all for it; and if you are too, then you will decide to see this through. Just remember; whatever happens to this game, is up to you and your peers. DoD has been a community effort from the beginning; and once the community clocks in again, so will the game rise again.

Not sure if you are Tony or some other troll but all I do know is it would be cool to see TPG more active than it is currently.

Does anyone actually have the power to stop teams dying early in the season? The charm to bring back all the inactive teams we've lost or the ability to convince the newly registered teams to get 6+ on their roster and actually play?

If not then the following example of a small league getting smaller will only get worse:

Teams that died/went inactive between season 33 and season 34:

Excuse me? I'M the one who gets loaded and comes up with insane ideas to save this game.

"There are HUGE improvements and bug fixes for the client. I know it is tedious to constantly update the client every week... but I think this will be the last update until the end of the season."

Sounds like fun. How could anyone not wanna play

Well I'll place my personal opinion as to why I haven't been playing...

1. I'm getting sick of playing the same maps I've played for a decade.
2. I don't like playing dod on Sunday nights
3. It's summer, and I'd rather be doing other things on my days off.

Maybe dod doesn't have it in it to be a year round game anymore. Personally I'm usually quite inactive in the summer, then by fall I'm interested again. TPG September - May perhaps? Small tournaments in the summer?

The competitive game cycle is already gone for quite long already, there is no way to revive the scene unless someone invest thousands of dollars in prizes and organization for teams to get interested and heat up the community outside 1911. TBH this last season suffered on too many delays and week offs (no matches next week, again) due to holidays on top of the recurring, season by season, lack of competitiveness. The anticheat coming was a fine improvement, alas too late :(

As much as i'd love to see DoD revived back to its glory days, it will never ever happen. If by chance steam revitalized the game like they did with cs:go, then there would be a lot of interest im sure. The seriousness of the game has passed unfortunately. A majority of the people who kept this community going are older now with wives, children, jobs etc.

I do miss it dearly though.

My biggest problem with your quote is that I don't understand why you and others have seemingly simultaneously decided you are sick and tired of them now? I mean were you guys not bored of them 5 years ago too? I guess the answer is probably "Yes I was bored then too" but yet you continued playing for another 5 years, will another couple of seasons/years really hurt? Providing you have the time of course. The map thing is kind of pointless to discuss because 90% of custom maps that have ever been made for DoD just don't work well 6v6 and the ones that do work, work pretty good - which is why they are played.

I think most people agree the competitive "scene" died almost a decade ago yet TPG has continued on and still gives people a place to play DoD. There is zero point to it all yet an active league keeps the game going, a game we still all love to play. TPG teams play for nothing other than some simple one up-man-ship and up until 2-3 seasons ago there were still 4 divisions of active teams that all played their matches every Sunday (Summer or not) yet for some reason this season we've not only got half the amount of divisions but we've also got teams dying left right and center too..

Two years ago many of you guys were doing regular FOTW videos, shout casts, predictions, season reviews and write ups - reading back on old threads it seemed like people genuinely cared and this game had some life to it, that was only two years ago, not five or ten..where are all those people now? The game was "Dead" then but people still showed interest and commitment, something that's almost non existent around here now which I find really strange.

If you and others miss it dearly, is it a huge ask to get you to come back and play 40 mins of DoD once a week? Nobody is expecting the scrim situation to suddenly turn into the early 2000's with teams playing multiple games every single night for practice but if all the teams I listed in this thread (and more) would just come back for a match a week (time/life permitting) everyone would benefit, you'd all get your nostalgia fix and with more teams involved there would be more activity on here as well (which could potentially bring back things like shoutcasts, fotw's etc etc).

Again- there is ZERO point to all of this, Sears said similar in his Vegas Lan thread too but does there have to be a point? Every single winning team on the TPG Past Champions link won a big fat zero for their efforts yet I bet they probably enjoyed every single game and teams could continue to enjoy playing DoD even now if they'd just come back.

TL;DR: Play DoD, because it's awesome.

I started playing 6v6 in 2012, when DoD was really dead like in 2013 and now, so what? I enjoy playing together with friends just for fun. In January I (with few friends) created 12man polish community with 20-30 players being active each evening. Most of them were pubbers totaly new in playing 6v6 games, we learned them how to play on basic maps etc. Level was average, but it was fun for everyone. We had two servers. I became inactive(health issues) in April and that ruined little polish DoD league. Players returned to play on pubs. Yes, I could get them into euro TPG, I registeted one team, but league is dead. Its pointless to get more if admins are inactive. Voting about next season was positive, right?

Btw.

Some players left for trying be pro in CS:GO, thinking like "1.6 was better, better recoil, movement, community, tactics, nubz killz me while full auto running blah blah blah... But everyone play this so I do" Ya, wish you to beat Titan, VP or other pro team someday. I don't see any sens in playing game when you don't even enjoy it, it's wasting time. Personaly I like that game,I enjoy playing it, playing DoD, playing old strategy games(most of it noone play anymore, but I don't care, it's fun for me).

Peace

Yeah, there are a lot of players/teams that went over to CS:GO in the last year or so. I don't blame people for switching games (especially when their friends do) but I don't think TPG/DoD really asks a lot of people with regards to commitment. It's just the one game a week which usually lasts less than an hour if it all goes to plan. I'm sure it's possible for people to play TPG games on Sunday and then get straight back into CS:GO, DOTA, LoL or whatever other game they play.

I guess we will just have to wait and see if next season works out better than this one did, it would be great if more Dinosaurs of DoD decided to return to the herd.

You are wrong, we were active as admins. But starting a season with 5 teams i think it was, that's just not going to work and/or be fun. That's why the TPG EU division died.

Me and bnzr tried to chase on as much as we could, but we're not wizards. So don't blame us for people not wanting to play.

Some of you people need to accept that as the competitive scene of a game dies down, or even when it just grows old (DoD is old as fuck), people will lose interest and go do other things for kicks. We're not sitting around saying "I'm definitely not playing DoD tonight because i herd gaem is ded". DoD just really doesn't enter the mind once you say "I don't think I want to play an hour every Sunday".
