not too quickly, sean
due to playing soccer, always having a job with manual labor, and refereeing soccer -- it's not easy to gain weight even with increased muscle mass -- just got to a cut 150 -- have since increased my caloric intake with the gainer post workout -- and for the first week spread out a 2nd shake throughout the day -- 1/4 between each meal
also am playing goalkeeper now and not refereeing - which has made for a serious increase in consumption over burned i'd say

That's ridiculous, Alex. Do you just barely eat anything during the day, or do you load up with those 2 meals?

On workout day I have a pre-workout shake. Post-workout (maybe 30-60 minutes following) I have meal 1. ~4-6 hours later is meal 2. Sometimes, depending on the workout day and how I'm feeling, I'll have 3 meals. Usually not though.
On non-workout days I will either eat a single meal, or 2 meals where one is really big (80-90% of daily intake), and the other meal is the remainder.

Eat more fat as it's calorie dense. Eat a fucking pint of Ben & Jerry's every night (dead srs).

False. Dietary cholesterol has a relatively small role on blood cholesterol. In fact I would suggest lowcarb eat entirely whole eggs for more calories since he's having trouble bulking.Black Hawk wrote:You notice if you eat that EVERY day your going to have cholesterol problems?lowcarb wrote:an example of what i eat now days:

Lowcarb - seriously, eat your whole, micronutrient-rich foods to hit your macro/micro requirements, then throw in something calorie dense like Ben & Jerry's. The only probable role your genetics will play is making your BMR higher resulting in a higher maintenance and subsequently a higher intake necessary to bulk.

Even if they are your only options, they won't hinder body recomposition. Calories determine body weight, macronutrients determine body composition (coupled with training). Food source is irrelevant. But for general health purposes, this isn't exactly ideal.

Re: Weightlifting
On a cold Friday afternoon, I had come home from school. I had been thinking of the gym all day. I was hungry, didn't have any lunch. In fact, I didn't eat because I spent the money. For the past month I was saving up for something. Something special which I bought at GNC. I was surprised they didn't ask for ID; I was pretty sure the cashier noticed how nervous I was. Anyways, my mom asked my how my day was when I got home, but I ignored her. I have more important things to do. I run to the bathroom and unpack my bag. In my school bag is a white plastic bag from GNC. I open the bag, first removing the receipt and flushing it down the toilet to get rid of the evidence. My heart was racing now. I unpack the creatine monster from the bag.
I wonder what people will be asking me when they see that I will be 50lbs heavier. Should I say I was just eating a lot? I remove the label from the tub and tear it into a thousand small pieces. I flush that down the toilet, too. It is time now. I run up to my room when my mom ask me what I am holding. I panic, sweat drips down my forehead and my teeth chatter. "Mom, it's just for a school project". "What project?" "I don't know mom I just started it!". A tear runs down my cheek. I run upstairs and open the creatine, scooping upservings into a clear water bottle. What have I gotten myself into? I fill it with water and drink it. There is no turning back now. The creatine monster is inside me now, it will control me. What should I do if I die? I cant let my family know about this.
I open the creatine tub and throw it all out the window; a white cloud of mysterious dust sparkles into the wind so graciously. I feel the substance taking control of me; I am now the monster. I walk downstairs, its time to work out; time to get big. Now I worry, I don't want to get too big; people will think I use steroids. I do use steroids. No I don't. Creatine. All I see is the weights now, I am almost downstairs when I hear "Do you want a cookie I just baked". I know I do not have time for this **** now. "No mom I do not want a cookie" I walk in the basement and drop to my knees before the weights, tears running down my cheeks. I turn to the right and look at myself in the mirror. Oh god, what have I done?

Re: Weightlifting
How would he get diabetes if he's within his set caloric surplus?willeh wrote:and giving lowcarb diabetes.
If lowcarb is bulking at 3,000 calories and eats 180g protein = 720 calories + 80g carbs of fruits/veggies = 320 calories + 50g fats = 450 calories, that adds up to 1,500 calories. And with proper food selection, he can easily have his micronutrient needs met, especially if he decides to supplement with individual micronutrients. But really, it's not necessary. Ask the Okinawans.
That leaves 1,500 calories for him to eat whatever the shit he wants, and a pint of Ben & Jerry's = ~1,200 calories depending on the flavor.
So tell me - if lowcarb properly stays within his caloric intake, balances his macronutrients, and maintains a healthy intake of micronutrients, what is wrong with eating Ben & Jerry's? People who bulk often find themselves eating 400-800g carbs; why do you think it matters whether it's a simple carb or complex carb? There's no difference in terms of physiological function as both are eventually broken down to glucose (or fructose or galactose - but fructose isn't really of concern for ice cream). Assuming he isn't insulin resistant or diabetic or something. Which I'm assuming he is not.
Sorry bro, but the whole myth about the necessity of 100% "clean eating" is just that: a myth.

Re: Weightlifting
Just do the best you can, then. Look up on the sites to see their nutritional information and plan out your calories/macronutrients ahead of time. Food source is irrelevant to body composition goals, so in terms of that you're fine. Your body doesn't care if you eat a burger from McDonald's or a homemade burger if the macronutrient composition is the same.seanality wrote:I live in a dorm room right since I am working at my school over the summer they gave me a free dorm room and over the summer their aren't enough students for them to offer a meal plan or even have the dining hall open so I am limited to a very small microwave and a very small fridge that wouldn't even fit a 6 pack of cans. It's just general health that won't be as optimal. But again, if it's just for a single summer, I really wouldn't sweat it at all.

If you ate ice cream all day and stayed within your caloric maintenance or under, you would NOT get diabetes unless you have insulin resistance or pre-diabetes, or a genetic predisposition to diabetes, perhaps.
For people who does not have any of those risks, why do you think eating ice cream within their caloric limit would result in diabetes? Would they get diabetes if they fulfilled their daily intake entirely with rice?
(I'd also like to take a moment and remind you I never suggested lowcarb eat all his calories in ice cream, but rather ~50% or less.)

it's clear you really don't understand the pathophysiology of diabetes. I can assure you eating a 1,200 calorie bowl of pure fat and sugar a day will not be good for your body. reading your comments it's clear that you are into health and fitness which is good for you. However reading bodybuilding magazines, articles on the internet, and body building forrums and taking them seriously is pretty lame. I don't know if that's what you do but it sure looks like it. We have multiple peer fitness trainers in our dept. and i can gaurentee you that if i asked them if i were to eat a 1,200 calorie bowl of icecream to meet my caloric needs would be good for me they in return would ask me if i was out of my mind.alex kirk wrote:Not touching the alcohol example as that's not relevant to what we're talking about.willeh wrote:if i were to drink all the calories i needed in one day with vodka id be sure to get diabetes and liver failure.
if i ate icecream all day but only to the point where i met my caloric needs i would get diabetes.
I really don't want to get in a debate with you because you will argue your case for 10 years until i give up. I do however suggest you pick up a text book of internal medicine and reacquaint yourself on diabetes.
In any case im really not a fan of any diet. I try to space my meals out throughout the day, eat small portions, and eat clean. If I wanted to gain some mass I would just up what I eat and the frequency of what I eat. Many men in their 20's have very high metabolisms and to eat like crap to gain mass would only hurt them in their later years of life.

Oh boy. YOU just told ME that reading bodybuilding forums and magazines are lame. Will, I base ALL my opinions on empirical, peer-reviewed research. I asked you for evidence for your claims, and you failed to give them. Can you even name the different types of carbohydrates? And I'm not talking about simple, complex, low GI, or high GI. These are meaningless outside of the context of diabetes-like conditions. I mean, do you really know the 3 types of carbs and their metabolic pathways?willeh wrote: it's clear you really don't understand the pathophysiology of diabetes. Furthermore - can you tell me the difference between eating 1,200 calories of Ben & Jerry's vs. 1,200 calories of white rice? Assuming macronutrients are consistent as both are very carb-heavy, though rice is even MORE carb-heavy and thus would be more prone to raising blood sugar and increasing the risk of diabetes. But seriously, what's the difference between these two scenarios?
What would happen to the sugar that you ate in ice cream if you stayed within your caloric maintenance or less?
Don't run, Will. There's hope for you yet.
P.S. do you know what it takes to be a fitness/personal trainer? 6-12 weeks of reading and a certification test. With zero bearing on nutrition. Even nutritionists and dieticians these days are not reliable sources of information, given how many of them still subscribe to the lipid hypothesis. So saying, "a fitness trainer says this" is an appeal to authority and does not verify your position. I need to see evidence for your claims in the form of facts, preferably empirical evidence if possible.

I always thought there were 4 types: monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides.
Again I assure you eating 1,200 calories of pure white rice a day would not be good for you either.
Where are you reading this research from- i try to keep up to date on new studies by reading nejm, jems, and jama.
on a side note since we are talking about fitness i did read an article in nejm about antioxidants- turns out people who over supplement in antioxidants die earlier than those who dont.

Re: Weightlifting
No, I said not in regards to simple, complex, or GI. The number of polymers simply implies the complexity of the carb, which has no bearing on body composition for our case.willeh wrote:I always thought there were 4 types: monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides.
I'm talking fructose, glucose, and galactose. Those are the 3 types of carbs. Whenever you eat fruit, it will be degraded into glucose and fructose. Whenever you eat rice, it will be degraded into glucose. Whenever you drink milk, it will be degraded into galactose and glucose, and the galactose is naturally always broken down to glucose.
For simplistic purposes, all that matters is glucose and fructose. This leads me to my question: what do you think happens when you eat 1,200 calories of glucose in the form of Ben & Jerry's? Give me a broad overview of what will happen in your body? How will it react, what functions will take place? Why does it mean you will inherently be at risk for diabetes without mentioning overall caloric intake?
Losing weight = increased insulin sensitivity which is the antithesis to diabetes. If you have a maintenance of 2,000 calories and eat 1,500 calories entirely of Ben & Jerry's, you'll lose weight at ~1 pound per week which will increase markers of health (CVD, at least) and increase insulin sensitivity. How will diabetes form under such conditions?
Ever hear of the Okinawans? They are the longest-living people on earth with the lowest rates of disability and CVD, and their dietary staples are white rice + starchy vegetables. Carbs make up anywhere between 70-95% of their macronutrient composition depending on the season.Again I assure you eating 1,200 calories of pure white rice a day would not be good for you either.
Which research? You're talking diabetes, so I'm assuming you're talking about research on blood sugar and insulin. Want to see research showing the insulinogenic effects of protein, and how a meal of 75g protein + 75g carbs raised blood insulin more than a meal of 125g carbs + 21g protein? If you think carbs are all bad, why does protein have potent insulinogenic effects?Where are you reading this research from- i try to keep up to date on new studies by reading nejm, jems, and jama.
Not necessarily all antioxidants, but some. Like those I've mentioned in this thread: folic acid and vitamin E, and possibly vitamin A. Though this is typically unnatural forms which may be due to the unnatural forms of the multivitamins themselves.on a side note since we are talking about fitness i did read an article in nejm about antioxidants- turns out people who over supplement in antioxidants die earlier than those who dont.

Re: Weightlifting
Let's get back to the topic which this thread was geared towards.
What is your weekly routine right now?
What are your goals?
What is your 1 rep max (if you even know or care)?
What supplements do you use?
I just started taking Cell-Tech yesterday, normally a $45 product I bought it for $5 from a military store. I know this will make me size up but I feel like I need to get the good old muscles working again at full strength so I can actually start my real routine again.
P.S. Does anyone do, tried, or know much about roids? I feel like I am at the point where I want to go full cookie.

1) Cell-Tech won't make you gain size. Caloric surplus will make you gain size.seanality wrote:Let's get back to the topic which this thread was geared towards.

You said you're 6'2" and 240 pounds? What is your body fat percentage? Why are you bulking?

It increases your water retention and absorption so it does make you gain size.alex kirk wrote: 1) Cell-Tech won't make you gain size. Caloric surplus will make you gain size.

I am not trying to bulk I just so happened to get a product for a 10th of its normal cost, I wasn't about to pass it up. In the past I always looked at it and passed it off as something I didn't need or want especially for its cost.
I have no idea what my body fat percentage is, all I can say is it is higher than I would like and a lot higher than it was 4 years ago when I dropped down to 190 lbs.
My main goal right now is to get my strength back to and above where it was 4 months ago. After that I plan to keep increasing my maxs and then cut.
The idea behind the roids is to surpass that plateau which I was at before. I continued to increase all of my lifts to the point where I could max the lat pull down for reps of 16 at 250, t-bar row over 250 for reps of 16, dumbell curl 75's, shoulder press 100's, and bench 315 for reps of 3. I just noticed that it wasn't 1 area that I was plateaued at but all and yes some of the reasons for the plateau were gym related but my diet was pretty intense, all geared towards high protein, low flower and sugar and over a gallon of water a day.

What does water retention have to do with muscle mass?seanality wrote:It increases your water retention and absorption so it does make you gain size.
Trying to gain strength over long periods of time does require a caloric surplus, which does imply bulking. I would seriously cut before bulking. You won't see any long-term gains in strength or mass without a regular, hypercaloric diet. By the time you get to the numbers you want to see, you could easily be clinically obese. Easily, if you're 6'2" and 240 pounds with a high body fat percentage as is.I am not trying to bulk I just so happened to get a product for a 10th of its normal cost, I wasn't about to pass it up. If you cut properly, you won't lose much mass/strength at all, and once you're done you'll be in more of a position to add mass/strength without risking your health. Just saying.

Re: Weightlifting
Then I would highly suggest slapping it into shape first! You have to work according to the abilities of the human body. If you want to gain long-term mass or strength, you have to gain weight, and subsequently you WILL gain fat. If you want to lose fat, you have to be in a chronic caloric deficit, and subsequently you will lose some (minimal) muscle mass and strength. You have to work in bulking/cutting cycles.seanality wrote:I'll consider all of this.

I would hold off on steroids for now if you are insistent on taking them at some point. I personally would never condone steroid use, but I realize many people want to try them, so all I can say is to be smart about them. To jump into them now would be very unwise.

"I want to get jacked" "should I take roids?" you seriously sound retarded. Find out your base caloric need and eat more than that.
Alex, what does your studying of research reveal about eating multiple small meals throughout the day and its effect on the metabolism. Also, aren't you starving your body with your diet, thus hurting your gains? A lack of protein causes the body to feed off of muscle some, right?

At this point roids are just something I would like to look into. I am not the small kid on the football team trying to catch up to the bigger boys. I am the big guy in the gym (college gym) who is trying to meet and beat his own personal goals and look good doing it. I know there are health issues with them but much like any supplement 1 is better for you than the other and I was looking for that insight from someone.
I think I will stick to my normal routine and try to make something of my diet, I mean at this point it is very random. The only thing I can really improve right now outside of the gym without hurting my wallet is the amount of sleep I get.

Re: Weightlifting
There is zero research that "reveals" multiple small meals throughout the day and its effect on metabolism. There is a confounding variable in all of the studies promoting the beneficial effects of multiple small meals: lack of caloric control among experimental groups. In all those studies, the groups that eat smaller meals throughout the day end up eating less calories. If calories are kept the same, meal frequency has zero bearing on body composition and metabolism. I'd be happy to post lots of research on the matter if you ACTUALLY intend on reading it. I can find one that shows higher fat loss in a group of people that eat 1 meal per day compared to 3 meals per day with no measurable difference in muscle mass.rehpyc wrote:"I want to get jacked" "should I take roids?" you seriously sound retarded. Alex, what does your studying of research reveal about eating multiple small meals throughout the day and its effect on the metabolism. Also, aren't you starving your body with your diet, thus hurting your gains? A lack of protein causes the body to feed off of muscle some, right?
Metabolic effect from eating food = TEF = thermic effect of food. This is a dose-dependent response. Meaning eating 1,800 calories in one meal vs. eating 300 calories in 6 meals yields the same NET effect at the end of the day.
Not starving my body. Advanced catabolism does not occur until ~24 hours post glycogen depletion assuming your body is not in a state of ketosis. The whole scare about catabolism is fueled by supplement companies to get people to buy their stuff. These are the same people that tell people they have to drink a whey shake (NOT CASEIN!) 30 minutes post-workout, and also stress the differences between whey and casein in terms of supplements. It really takes effort to get to those stages of catabolism. People believe our bodies make decisions based on 2-3 hour time frames, but that's so unbelievably false. Our bodies make decisions on 24-72 hour time frames given the issues we're talking about.
And yes, a lack of free amino acids = muscle catabolism. But what matters is what your intake looks like at the end of the day. Free amino acids stay in the blood stream for a long ass time. That coupled with glycogen's anti-muscular catabolic effects means serious lack of muscle catabolism.
I would strongly urge you to stay away from steroids for now, until you hit your genetic capacity. Srs.seanality wrote:At this point roids are just something I would like to look into.
