I actually bought Rippetoe's SS book and it's fascinating. There's so much information in there, totally worth reading the 300 pages.

I think Rippetoe's is the quintessential starting strength program. I think it's just the most well-revered for getting the initial, linear gains. Just stick with it as long as you're still gaining strength. Once you stop gaining, time for something else.
5x5 like Ricky mentioned, 5/3/1, Smolov, etc. More advanced training routines, higher frequency, a little more volume. You'll look like Kai Greene within 12 months, bro.

Also: I haven't read the entire text, just the basics of the routine. But if Rip talks about nutrition at all, just ignore that shit. He's brilliant when it comes to training, but admits that his understanding of nutrition is crazy limited.

http://scoobysworkshop.com/ any opinions on this dude? I don't know shit about routines, but I set up a custom routine through his website that I might start. I've been doing 400 pushups daily, with pullups mixed in every few days.
yay or nay on this?

edit: I've never worked out my entire life minus playing sports in high school, but thats close to 9 years ago or so. even with what I've been doing, I noticed great results so I'm hooked.

Scooby is a nice guy who legitimately tries to help people, but he spews so much misinformation it hurts. I mean, the fact that he's referring to DB rows as an exercise for lats hurts already, and that isn't even
that big of a deal.
Do you have any equipment at your disposal or no? Dumbbells, gym, home workout set, bands, etc.? Or absolutely nothing?

His nutrition advice is basically to eat more and sleep more and that if you're not getting stronger after X months, you're not doing the program. He doesn't go into macro breakdowns or anything like that other than the gram protein per pound bodyweight, so it's not all that helpful on what to eat.

Never listen to someone who has you hitting abs 2x per week and every other muscle group 1x per week. The routines that have you working each muscle group 1x per week are intended for people who do steroids because when you're stacking d-bol, insulin, growth hormone, testosterone, etc. you can get crazy gains from a single workout per week. For people who are natural (aka, you), your body will see gains from a single workout for 24-48 hours after that workout. After that 24-48 hours, you need to re-stimulate the muscles again. For people on steroids, this ain't an issue. This is a long way of saying: you need to hit each muscle group more than once per week. The people who say otherwise are typically really big dudes, and they're more often than not doing steroids of some kind. Or people trying to mimic those big dudes without a clue as to what the shit they're doing.
I would do a 3 day split of a full body routine, a 4 day split of upper/lower body, or a 4 day split of push/pull motions. It's up to you and how much you want to work out each week. It'd be better if you had a gym at your disposal, but you can make do with those for the time being.

I'd avoid personal trainers. Most of them spout total nonsense. You see them throwing people on Swiss balls and leg extensions. I don't think I've seen many personal trainers give a routine that relies primarily on compound movements. Most of them isolate to a gross extent.
Rely on me. They'll know it's credible.
@tr4gik - If you go for a gym membership, look at Scorch's post about Rippetoe's SS program. It's probably considered the quintessential program for beginners by one of the most revered trainers ever. It's a ridiculously simple routine, it has you in the gym 3x per week for ~45 minutes each time, and the gains you'll see are as good as what you'd see in probably any other program (assuming your diet is in check, of course).

The gym membership would be solely to take advantage of there weights of course, I've already read enough horror stories about these so called personal trainers.

Good man. All you need is a squat rack, a bench, a barbell and the weights that go with it. Literally, you need no more equipment beyond those things.

And, for a good long list of auxiliary isolation stuff that you can do at high intensity (although I'm not a fan of this circuit as is written):
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/clay-ma ... dator.html
Honestly, the part I have the hardest time getting across to most people, especially beginners, is that jumping into the gym and doing a bunch of isolation training like a body builder isn't not only going make you look stupid, but also put you at risk of injury.
With most people I work with, I spend weeks teaching them proper squat/deadlift technique, and make sure they have a strong and stable core before we move onto anything else. Training to make yourself a bigger/faster/stronger athlete is a totally different process from body building, in which you are doing a lot of isolation (and steroids) to produce a desired aesthetic.
Now, you can go full-retard the other way too, and go crossfit style, but yeah, lets just not go there...

This is why I do juijitsu when I want a real workout. Its uses all muscle movements vs another human, you can't ask for any better strength and conditioning.

Depends on how you define "strength" and "conditioning." Cycling is the worlds most energy-taxing event. Weight training is the most pure form of strength training. That's why I do both for my strength and conditioning. Your goals are different than mine, but jujitsu is objectively less of a workout than what I do in terms of energy exerted.

I have spent a lot of time trying different things in the weight room and realized the concepts are pretty basic. I always try to focus on the big lifts (squat, bench, deadlift, powerclean, etc) and try to do a lot of core strengthening as well as lower back (still considered part of the core). It is very rare that I do a bicep curl. I swear the gym that I workout at, the squat rack collects dust and goes untouched between the time which I use it.

Grappling may not be the best thing to do for strength gains, but it is the one of the best ways to learn how to use your whole body and work all your muscles. If having a strong core is one of the most important things, jiujitsu will give that to you.
You'd be surprised how many people get confused on how to do an elbow escape, roll over their shoulder, or go inverted. Like you said the goals are different, you want to lift weights and go ride a bike, I want to choke people for a living. It is only as hard as you train. I've never done anything that was harder than a jiujitsu match.
