On a somewhat related note did anybody ever find the fabled HLTV model pack with all the weapons included? Like ones the stoss and mp40 on it? I don't really ever use HLTV models because I feel I play better without them but they are fun to use in pubs to change it up every now and then.

This is how custom files work with steam hl1 games. All of the default files are stored in the .gcf, which is automatically checked for consistency when you start the game. Any changes to your .gcf cause steam to repair the file, so you don't have to worry about what's inside of the .gcf, only the files in the folders that DoD/HL uses to customize your mod. If there was a standardized set of HLTV models, you COULD allow those if you wanted to by creating md5 hashes of the files and checking the hashes of the files on each user's computer, but that could cause a significant performance hit on older systems as generating hashes can take a lot of cpu cycles.

Haha! Hope you're not being srs because the checker analyze the consistency of the .mdl file as well (aka size / if it's the default .mdl of the .gcf steam folder).
mogers wrote:I completely understand why HLTV models are going away. However, wouldn't a translucent weapon model show up in screenshots..? Or can you toggle weapon models in game?
Do we dispute everyone these days? No. We assume we're all legit peers and don't dispute unless we are talking about ex-cheaters (as if they stopped cheating...). Like I've said before, these HLTV models are low potential infractions. But infractions nonetheless as they're custom game files are forbidden to use. While HLTV models can be taken as something that makes you screen smoother, there are others who clearly brings up advantage to it's users. And you can't switch up models, textures or sprites while the game is open - it crashes the hl.exe.

All files have to have the same name as the default materials so the game runs properly.

any model that is considered illegal ( ANY CUSTOM GUN MODEL - there is no way to tell the difference by just reading the sprite name. again refer to my example; v_k98.mdl can be an hltv model or a translucent model) will be detected because it is in your dod folder where you add your customizations that overwrite the gfc/gcf thing.
Ya that explains it, thanks. I was under the impression that they were using a more advanced method for determining which models were being used (actually comparing the files to the original, which I have no idea if it's possible within the constraints of hl1 addons).

If I am correct, it checks for file consistency. This means if you have any custom models for guns, any custom sprites, pretty much anything that isnt default except for map models it will block them and stop you from connecting.

Re: HLTV Models

by cassinoroyale » Thu Oct 25, 2012 8:05 pm

I think ya'll are missing the point here: no matter what model you have, its name has be the same of the default model. That being said, there is no way to differ an 'harmless' HLTV model from a translucid, coloured or even ones with different animations. For the sake of having a more organized league, with less spaces for smart people taking advantage of modified shit, we are banning them. Everyone here agreed that the HLTV models does only make your screen cleaner, hence going back to it shouldn't be difficult. Maybe the approach had a bit of grumpiness but all in all, having this anti cheat / checker working is something to help the community and intended to improve competition. And just jump into he Matt's pool, where the majority of the voters don't use them. Just chill the fuck out.

And Ricky, you should've implement STA way before. Having more leagues in parallel, in different days, makes the game stronger in a sense of allowing people to play matches on a different day than sunday. I bet we have people here that can't make sundays but would play again if they had a league to play during the week. Think about it you fucking anarchist!

Re: HLTV Models

Like I told defiance before.. Euros, we have always been allowed to use them. Until now in TPG. But we adjust. Like we did with spawnnading and spawnshooting. Even though I'm the Euro's TPG admin, I'm gonna give my honest opinion about this, with no disrespect to TPG or defiance. If these models are considered giving you an advantage over here, I'm gonna buy it.
But before TPG, I had them for 5years. And I didn't use all of the models. I kept the default garand and kar model.
I think stealth is right when he says that it doesn't give you an advantage. It doesn't bring up your crosshair any faster. Or in any other way makes you a better player. You can customize this game in so many ways that hltv models shouldn't be any difference. And just because a rule always has been the same, doesn't mean that it's right. Our society constantly keeps changing rules to make everything better. And the game is so dead that we could adjust it within reason so that the players that still are left can enjoy it in their own way.

You don't change everything about your DoD just to get an advantage. You change your GUI and scoreboard cause of how it looks. For me its the same with HLTV models. I hate when that arm comes up and starts swinging the weapons up and down. I dont need that. I just want my weapon.

Back in the days i know some people in counter-strike played with no weapon at all cause they wanna maintain their focus on the crosshair. Which is the same case here, for me atleast.
When you switch fast from kar - pistol - kar after you shoot.. You dont see the animation of the pistol, cause it gets interupted. If we were to say that all players have to look at the animation we shouldn't allow them to fastswitch either. Let the gun reload then.

Since the DoD-community is so small these days I feel it's importent that we listen to what everyone has to say, what to improve and what not. Just to keep the game like we want it, so everyone keeps playing it.
If 80% of the community doesn't care if players use hltv-models. Then why force them to stop using them?
Don't come and say "So what's next, we are gonna allow wallhack cause 80% are okay with it?"... within reason.

Even though I've been using HLTV models myself, I tried being objective. And like I said. I'm fine with sticking to the old rules, and adjust like a lot of us have. But I would bring the models back if they were allowed.

The hltv model i miss the most, is the grenade ones. Which I can't really say improves my nading skills.

Add cl_particlefx to the cvar list if you want to see a real shit storm lol.

Anyway no matter what you do to customXhair.spr it would not give you an advantage over another player. That is mostly for minor changes in shape and color from what Valve offers by default. A darker scoreboard would actually hurt you, because you can't see through it when it is up. Sensitivity, Gamma, Brightness, and Key bindings are editable in the MENU SYSTEM. The game was made intending you to be able to edit these things.

While HLTV Models offer a minor advantage (and they do offer an advantage, because you don't have animation to interfere with your vision) the main reason they would have to be excluded by the server add-on is it compares the files in the list to make sure they are the defaults. If we remove that check then people could put whatever models they wish in there not just HLTV models. I could make my K43 look like a garand. I could make my models semi-transparent.

If HLTV models didn't give you any advantage at all you probably would have no desire to use them.

I don't think that it was always "HLTV MODELS" are illegal. More-so that any custom model was illegal. Like you said it doesn't differentiate.. ANY CUSTOM MODEL = ILLEGAL. Do I feel HLTV models should be illegal? No. I don't see how they give a player an advantage. But if this is a way to prevent models that can actually give a player an advantage then, I understand.

Banning HLTV models is plain fucking stupid. With that said, I'm not removing shit you can all kiss my, hairy, paste, ass.
HLTV models have ALWAYS been illegal. I'm not sure why you think this is something new. I have found a way to enforce the rule, and am doing so. I cannot pick and choose which custom model to allow. It is default or nothing. Custom xhairs, scoreboards, sensitivity, brightness, key bindings have all been legal. There is a difference.
If you join a pub with crazy mods and what-not.. can it change your models. Or does it leave the default alone and just add custom models to a folder somewhere?
I don't believe pubs will change your player models. They can change your mapmodels. Its not like someone will get in trouble if they try to join a server and it won't let them in. The addon tells you where the file is, dod/models/whatever.mdl and you go into your folder and delete it, pretty easy fix.

If you want to, keep joining connect hd.game.nfoservers.com:27015; password scrim and delete what it tells you to, until you finally get in.

Banning HLTV models is plain fucking stupid. With that said, I'm not removing shit you can all kiss my, hairy, paste, ass.
