How do I ping less to Toronto than you? YOU LIVE IN TORONTO. Are you on wireless? all those tests were done on wireless, the ping for each would be less if I was connected directly to the modem.

Rogers is just plain terrible. 100$ a month for 100 gig limit, sounds legit, seeing as I'm paying 40$ a month for unlimited. Yeah, shitty internet~

So, I got a new modem, Cisco Linksys DPC3008.

Ping tracking to a San Jose NFO server (~50mi) while connected to the modem via ethernet cable.
From my desktop:

From my netbook:

From my netbook with a new ethernet cable:

So, there's something really weird going on during the hop to the modem. I assume it should essentially ping 0 constantly. This is the same problem I saw when the router was in between, which would exclude router problems, again. I can try another computer again, but I have a feeling it won't make a difference.

I'm pretty much out of suggestions but would love to know what the solution is. If you happen to figure out please post it here.

What's the ping to your router/modem? If the ping to router/modem is low and stable(should be below 10 ms) then It's on their side, could be anything between the cable to your building to a random cable below the street somewere or the router your line is connected to.

start>cmd>ping *routerip* -t
Let it send about 15 before stopping it( ctrl c).

So, I'm told I'm skipping a little less than I was before, but it's possible that the internet was fine during those few moments. I was just testing what you said a second ago before I checked here and I'm a little confused. Here's my latest PingPlotter 10-minute result directly connected to the modem:
Image

Before, I was assuming that first hop (DNSName --------------) was the modem, but I realized that the modem IP was just 192.182.100.1. Pinging that results in a 0ms response.

Code: Select all

Ping statistics for 192.168.100.1:
    Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 20, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms
So what is the first hop (69.181.184.1)?
Image

My current IP is 69.181.194.205, so I assume that first hop (owned by Comcast) is the service assigning my IP address. I'm not sure how much the first hop affects the ping of the subsequent hops, so I don't want to go too far down the list for no reason.

Another tech should be coming in the next 2-3 hours and I'll have him take a look at all my results thus far. If this doesn't work, I'm just going to have to yell at someone at customer service until they bump me up to actual IT people instead of the idiots that just try to powercycle the modem every time I call.

Ask them nice to send on your issue to the next resolving group. Yelling won't really help, if they still do not listen, ask them for contact number to complaint department. Should get some fire in their asses.

I hope you get yours fixed because this is basically what always happens to me. It's better than it used to be (my ping would be from spike from 100 - 400 constant rather than 50 - 200)

So, even though I confirmed the technician appointment for today, he didn't show up. When I called, apparently, they didn't know why and the appointment was supposedly for cable TV problems and not internet problems.

I finally got to talk to, what sounded like, tier 2 tech support at Comcast as he actually understood what I was talking about and didn't just try to restart my modem. They're sending another tech out on Thursday to check the lines again.

Here's an updated and more detailed/representative picture of what my connection looks like to a San Jose (~50mi) server:

At least people say I'm less skippy now though (?) despite what that graph tells me.

Really excited for tomorrow's installment. This has become quite the narrative.

Also, I have it on good authority that Japanese schoolgirls don't skip. Got it from an expert on all things Japan and girls. And sometimes girls that actually have penises. I try not to click the things he sends me now.

p.s. It's Moriar.

It's additive. If you see the ping not go from lowest to highest when you do a tracert like this, it means you're seeing spikes in latency at some hop closer to you than or at the hop where the spike shows up in the trace. e.g. in the latest screenshot, you experienced a latency spike somewhere between you and the 144.232.9.67 node (inclusive).

chuck mentioned changing your MTU to something above 1500.... 1500 is the highest you can go as far as WAN is concerned. I believe you could probably go as high as 9000 MTU on the LAN side if you had a router/switch that supported jumbo frames. I could be wrong....

Try lowering your MTU in the router to 1472

Check this article out, it could provide some useful knowledge about MTU settings. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793

Here's what it looks like currently to a San Jose server.
Image

I was able to get through to higher tier tech support and they sent another tech out to my place today. He checked the line coming into the apartment building and said everything was perfect. He said that whenever he encounters this problem, it's always with someone that lives in an apartment and that it was probably a problem with the coax line from the cable box in the apartment complex to the apartment itself--something he can't really fix. I told him this had only started happening (or at least I started noticing it when people complained) about a month ago and I've been in the apartment for over two years now.

Apparently, Comcast had changed the frequency or something in the past month, so that could possibly be the problem. He couldn't see the frequency from the modem's web UI, so he called the head technician and told him to do some stuff on his end. He told me to keep monitoring it tonight and let him know tomorrow morning if anything the tech did fixed the problem.

lololololol. Sadly, there's nothing to deliver. The techs thought it could be something to do with the frequency, but there connection is still really unstable after they tried changing that. They said the line is fine from their end to the apartment cable box. It's also fine at the wall outlets. They said it might be the line from the cable box to the apartment, but this problem only started recently and I've lived here for almost three years. No solution yet.

At this point, I don't think anyone even cares anymore. I'm doomed to be Japanese, but fortunately for many of you, I was already Japanese to begin with.

Yeah, we used to play Diablo2 religiously for a while until a couple years back. I mostly just talk to him on AIM. I don't see him too often on Steam and I think his Facebook profile picture is of a white guy he found while googling his name. He goes to CAL though and I had lunch a couple times with him.
